EAST VILLAGE WALKING TOURS

There is no better way to get to know a neighborhood than by talking a walking tour with a qualified and experienced guide. The official walking tours of the East Village Visitor Center are offered by the Lower East Side History Project; an award winning non-profit organization dedicated to researching the history of the greater Lower East Side (which actually includes the East Village.) LESHP’s volunteer guides are native New Yorkers who are professional educators, researchers, authors, and active in the community — and the organization offers a variety of public tour topics to choose from. LESHP also caters tours for groups and individual private tours. Specifically interested in the Jewish History of the neighborhood? Then we recommend the Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy, which offers public and private tours on a regular basis.

This is a crash course in East Village/Lower East Side history. From the farmlands of the 1600s and the wealthy estates of the 1700s, to immigration, tenements, the “melting pot” and how the East Village became a haven for artists and counter culturalists in the twentieth century (and everything in between).

Despite recent gentrification, the East Village neighborhood of the Lower East Side, technically E.14th Street to E. Houston Street, still retains much of its radical character.

Every Saturday at 12:00pm

Fee: $20 General Admission

Location: in front of Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery

She is a community activist and is passionate about preserving the fabric of New York City neighborhoods. 2009 GRAMMY NOMINEE Percussionist Wilson “Chembo” Corniel was born in Manhattan on November 22, 1953 of proud Puerto Rican parents and raised in the humble streets of Red Hook, Brooklyn. It was during these years as a quick-witted youngster that he had the privilege and honor to study with such luminaries of the Afro-Caribbean percussion tradition as,Tommy Lopez Sr., “Little Ray” Romero, Louie Bauzo, and Cachete Maldonado.

Chembo honed his skills at The Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts in New York and at the prestigious La Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba under the direction of the great Chucho Valdés. His intense studies with such legends noted above channeled his energy onto a path where Wilson “Chembo” Corniel has now created a reputation for himself among musicians and the public. Today, he is considered as one of the best hard-hitting, versatile percussionists around.  Chembo teaches percussion to students at the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music and leads numerous clinics throughout the United States, bringing awareness of the rich Afro-Caribbean traditions to others.  Among his credits, Chembo was chosen by Latin Percussion to create his own instructional DVD entitled  An Introduction to Hand Percussion: Volume I – Congas.  This DVD was released in December of 2000 with distribution by Warner Brothers and has been a success.  He’s been a vital endorser of Latin Percussion instruments since 1982 as he is currently for Remo drum heads, Vic Firth sticks and Sabian cymbals.  His touring credits are as long as his performing credits.  Chembo has toured with many major artists throughout Europe, Asia, North & South America, and the Caribbean.  Television credits include an appearance on the “Bill Cosby Show” and a recurring recording gig on Nickelodeon’s children show, “Dora the Explorer”.  Chembo continues to perform and/or record with many artists of different genres. He is currently concentrating on leading his own Latin Jazz quintet, “Chembo & Grupo Chaworó”.  Chembo received a GRAMMY NOMINATION by NARAS IN 2009 for “BEST LATIN JAZZ ALBUM” for his 2009 CD release entitled Things I Wanted To Do. This is a well-balanced Latin Jazz group that incorporates many rich traditions, such as writer Aurora Flores states:  a sprinkling of be-bop, a touch of swing with a dollop of bomba, rumba, tango and danzón topped with ‘un chin’ de charanga.

Pre911/Twin Towers Once Stood

Pre911/Twin Towers Once Stood

The 10th anniversary of the tragic event of 911 in New York City that stole many precious lives and also granted security among New Yorkers is nearing with much of evaporating emotions in layers of sorrows, pain and hope for healing.

Three years ago, SB D Gallery curated and directed the first exhibition that stopped the life of Twin Towers as of September 10th, 2001, in effort to heal from the wound by bringing back the happy memories of Twin Towers before the terror.

As a closure, “Pre911:Twin Towers Once Stood” will have the finale this year marching with a decade of struggles, and will present your messages in forms of arts;Photographs, drawings, paintings, poems, sculptures, mixed media… without limited to the medium, we will share our soul and spirit united as one, the human.

All 75 heartfelt international artists’ will be participating with their art works to be displayed on HD screens, and also multiple fabric banners will be printed with images and messages to be hung at our next door gallery. Guests will walk through these ceiling high long banners to experience the memories of being inside or right in front of buildings.

‘Pre911:Twin  Towers Once Stood’ book will be published as well which is for sale for $50. All the profit will be donated to 911 Families Association. You may purchase the book online at SB D Shop. Click here to purchase.

The exhibition will open on September 11, 2011, at 4pm and runs for two weeks.

My hope, as a resident living in downtown of Manhattan for 21 years and at the same time, curator and director of SB D Gallery, is to accept the life that is beyond the control of morality, and go on with the life finding comfort leaning on each others. It will NEVER be forgotten, nor healed, and that sharp stabbing into our souls on that specific day of terror will be remembered with the deep scar.
