Lie Sang Bong Takes on New York’s Fashion Week

“Make your mark in New York and you are a made man.”
-Mark Twain

New York City is a place where ideas come alive and dreams come true. Living and working in a densely populated city, people often wonder how they can stand out in the crowd. There may be infinite solutions, but maybe the key to success is fashion. Dressing well provides the confidence for people to do extraordinary things.

Lie Sang Bong recently debuted at New York’s Fashion Week with his Fall/Winter 2014 collection. The designer has been in the fashion scene for many years and has presented at Seoul and Paris Fashion Weeks. He is known worldwide as the “Korean McQueen” and has dressed a collection of famous celebrities including Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Rihanna, Juliette Binoche, Katerina Graham, Kelly Rowland and more.

Lie Sang Bong promotes fashion as an art form and has participated in exhibitions at galleries and museums throughout the world. Life is like a work of art and Lie Sang Bong’s “fashion is defined by the lifestyle and culture of the people who wear it.” The Designer’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection is expressed in a way that shows an understanding and appreciation of New Yorkers. Art is in the eye of the beholder and this collection pin points the beauty that is New York City.

“Inspired by powerful photographs of volcanic eruptions, lave surging into the sea, and Yellowstone National Park’s majestic Grand Prismatic Spring, the collection is a visual dialogue between the passion of emotion and structured restraint of practicality.”

The City of New York is filled with sightful architecture and diverse culture. The new collection presents coats, dresses, suits, and evening gowns with architectural silhouettes and feminine form. Like the architectural structures that have stood the test of time, it is important to have staple articles of clothing in your wardrobe. Lie Sang Bong’s use of colors such as reds, blues and neutrals exemplifies timeless fashion. These colors make a statement and reflects the bold and ambitious people of New York City.

The mixed materials used for this new collection is like New York City’s culture, a melting pot of diversity. Materials featured in the collection include cashmere, wool, silk, lace and fox fur. The trend of combining materials started to take flight last year and looks like it’s here to stay for this upcoming Fall/Winter season. Lie Sang Bong’s collection includes “a series of standout coats” and the one that I noticed the most was a red coat mixed with black material and shows a red colored houndstooth material. This coat is reminiscent of grunge style of the 80s and 90s mixed with the elegance of a New Yorker. In a city that never sleeps, it’s good to have fashion that can transform from day to night wear.

Lie Sang Bong’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection was a good execution of clothing made for and inspired by the people of New York. This collection will be available in August 2014 and what’s in store for the future will be interesting to see.

“If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.”

Memorial Service for Kevin Wendall aka FA-Q on January 2, 2011 in Lower East Side

The Memorial Service for Kevin Wendall aka FA-Q is set for January 2, 2010, from 4-7pm. Below is the personal letter from Angela, the finance who stood by Kevin throughout his illness with such love and dedication.

Dearest Friends and Family

As some of you may already know, Kevin Wendall aka FA-Q, passed away on Nov 15th. For surgery that was supposed to bring him home in 3 days, he spent 2+ years recovering from complications after the procedure. I want to thank everyone for all the phone calls, emails and messages of support throughout these last few years. For reasons I can’t understand, it comforts me to know that the man who means everything to me, also means something to you. With the help of Toyo, Dennis and Kazuko, I will be putting together a memorial for Kevin, to be held on Sunday Jan. 2, 2011 from 4pm-7pm. Please come and share your stories or pictures of him to put on the wall. We could all use a good laugh, and Kevin was always the first to make that happen, either by telling nonsensical stories or by the goofy faces he loved to make.
