Sylvia Wald, founder of The Sylvia Wald and Po Kim Art Gallery, had her 95th birthday celebration on October 30th, 2010, at her gallery. Many came to congratulate her
Sylvia Wald was born in 1915 in Philadelphia and studied art at Moore Institute in Philadelphia before moving to New York in 1930′s. As a socially and politically conscious artist, in thirties and forties, her illustration art works in free press publications addressed the social and racial inequalities of the day. Her painting style was associated with American Magic Realism and Surrealism. In the forties and in fifties, she developed an experimental print making method, which garnered her a title of a pioneer Abstract Expressionist printmaker. From 1960′s to recent years, Wald’s sculptural works started to take precedent over her two dimensional works. Made with found objects combined with roughly built up surfaces, works were noted for “vital in its ever developing quality”. Wald’s works are featured in many national and international collections, among them: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Solomon R.Guggenheim Museum, in New York, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C, Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, and Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts, Grunewald Collection Museum, U.C.L.A., Los Angeles, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, France, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England.
